Girls Cabin Trip

Last weekend I went to the North Georgia mountains with a few girlfriends - Sarah, Kat, & Heather.  Sarah has a friend that owns a cabin near Blue Ridge and graciously lets friends use it, so Sarah requested it for a girls-only weekend away from our children.  It was a much-needed getaway, and my first time away from Lola overnight.

We headed up around 3 on Friday afternoon, and while we hit some traffic, we made it there around 5 (and luckily Kat was driving - thanks, Kat!).  We explored the cabin and settled in (and opened some drinks, if I'm going to be honest).  It was a large cabin with four bedrooms and three bathrooms, two living areas, great views, and everything was beautifully furnished.  Sarah made us a delicious dinner of salad and pasta, and we enjoyed a leisurely meal at the dining room table.  We played Scattergories for a little while, but mostly we just chatted all night, before heading to bed around midnight (so late!).

I should mention that we discovered several scorpions.  The owner had warned us about kudzu bugs, and we vacuumed those up when we arrived.  But then I saw a dead scorpion by the couch in the living room.  Sarah bravely vacuumed it (while looking away), and we assumed it was a one-time thing.  Unfortunately Kat and Heather, who were staying in the basement bedrooms, found a few more down there, one of which was alive.  Someone (not me) dealt with those scorpions, and we tried not to think about it.  But Saturday morning Kat found one on her bed.  That freaked her out enough to move upstairs to stay with Sarah.  Heather decided to tough it out and continue to stay in the basement.  I think we saw about 10 scorpions all weekend, but luckily most were dead, and no one got bitten.

Saturday morning we all woke up fairly early, due to our normal waking times, and we lounged around the house.  We decided to go to downtown Blue Ridge for lunch, so we got showered and dressed and headed to town around 11.  Downtown was really cute, and we ate at a restaurant called Harvest on Main.  We walked around a little, and then we drove to Mercier Orchards to buy some apples.  Picking season was over, but they still had plenty of apples and other things in their shop.  We taste-tested some apples and then picked out some to take home.  They were delicious.

Saturday afternoon I laid down for a bit, but I think I've lost my ability to nap, because I couldn't fall asleep.  The others watched the GT football game (we won!).  We started watching the second Hunger Games movie, and then we took a break to go for a walk before it got dark.  Sarah said there was a "nice little hill" we could walk up, where we could see the intersection of Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina.  Apparently Sarah has a skewed idea of what "little hill" means, because this hill was probably at a 60 degree angle - it looked like it went straight up, and it was pretty long.  It was paved, though, so it wasn't too bad to get to the top (even though we were all huffing and puffing).  We enjoyed the view for a bit and headed back to the cabin.

Saturday evening was more of the same - eating (Kat made us pumpkin chili), drinking, and chatting.  We didn't get motivated enough to play any more games.  Sunday we hung around for a little bit, and then we drove home.

It was a fabulous weekend.  So relaxing, and it was so nice to get to talk to my good friends for a while without being interrupted.  I did miss Lola and Joseph, but they went to Spruce Pine to visit Joseph's parents, so I knew they were having fun.  And when they came home Sunday afternoon and Lola saw me, she gave me the biggest smile I've ever seen :)

Thanks to Sarah for organizing!  Let's make this an annual tradition, please.

  1. It was so very relaxing and fun! Except the scorpions of course... And I totally agree that we should do it again next year.

  2. That "hill" was no joke! Agree...let's do it again next year...with fewer scorpions.
