Thomas - 7 Weeks

Thomas was seven weeks old on Sunday, and he's constantly changing (as babies do).  His first two or three weeks, I remember Joseph and I saying that he never cried and was just a perfect baby.  Well, that has definitely changed.  He is by no means a terrible baby, but he cries a lot now and is quite needy.  Usually if someone is holding him he is content, but sometimes he even cries then.  We are still learning his cues so hopefully we will get better at soothing him.

We think that Thomas may possibly have acid reflux, and that it could be contributing to his fussiness.  He gets upset sometimes during or after a feeding, and he has a lot of wet burps and hiccups.  He has also started spitting up a lot over the past week or two.  I'm working on altering my nursing habits to see if that helps.  Then I'll ask the doctor about it when we go to his two-month appointment later this month.

We moved Thomas to his crib when he was five weeks old, and I think we're all sleeping better now.  He would wake 2-3 times a night to eat, but he would go back to sleep almost immediately every time, so I was only up with him for about 15 minutes (although of course I can't always go back to sleep easily...).  The past week he has been sleeping really well, with his first stretch of sleep being 7-8 hours long and waking between 3 and 4 to eat.  Then he'll go back to sleep until 6 or 7, and maybe back to sleep again after that too.  It's been great for me - now I just need to make myself go to bed earlier!

Thomas' naps are still all over the place.  I've tried to get him to nap in the crib, but that only lasts 20-30 minutes.  And then he's fussy because he's still tired.  But he'll sleep well in the carrier, and really well on our bed if I lay with him (2-3 hours).  I can't complain since his nighttime sleeping has been so great, but I want him to figure out napping before he starts daycare next month.

As for feeding, Thomas tried his first bottle this weekend and did great!  I remember Lola hating it and screaming, so I was worried, but he took to it right away.  He only drank two ounces, though, so not quite a full feeding.  He seemed content, but I nursed him some a little while later since he wasn't going to sleep.  We hope to get him to eat a full meal tomorrow so that I can go to book club on Thursday (my first girls' night!).

The weather has been nicer lately, so we've gotten to go on some walks.  I'm happy to get him outside when I can - it's hard having a baby in the winter.  We haven't gone to any play dates yet, but we hope to go to one soon for his Grant Park playgroup.  Although I really like the people in Lola's playgroup so I'm inclined to just keep hanging out with them :)

(Thomas is really cute while sleeping, so I apologize for all of the sleeping photos below.)
