Thomas - 4 Months

Thomas is four months old!  The time is definitely flying by.  My tiny little boy has grown into a chubby, expressive, smiley, fun little guy.  It's great watching him grow and start to be able to interact with us.

Health
He had his four-month doctor's appointment last Friday (April 29).  He did really well!  The doctor said he looks great and is growing well.  He screamed when he got his three shots but was easily calmed with some nursing.  He was back to smiling as we walked out of the office and ran into Andy and Hank.

Stats:
  • Weight: 15 lbs 3.5 oz (46%)
  • Height: 26.6 inches (96%)
  • Head: 16.4 inches (56%)
Thomas has been a little congested lately, but he hasn't had a fever and is still generally happy.  His only other health issue is cradle cap on his head.  We've been using a coconut oil and baking soda mixture to scrub the skin.  It seems to bother him a little bit when his eyebrows get bad - he'll rub his face back and forth on my arm, like he's scratching it.

Milestones
He rolled over for the first time on May 4 (18 weeks).  He probably would have done it sooner, but we haven't been putting him on his tummy much since he doesn't seem to like it.  Joe and Diane were in town and watching him, and Diane said she put him on his tummy and he rolled over almost immediately!  I tried later in the day and he did it again.  He is definitely getting stronger - he likes to kick his legs a lot and is rolling onto his side from his back.  I'm sure it won't be long before he rolls over from back to tummy.

Teething
We think Thomas is starting to teethe.  He loves to gnaw on things - Sophie the Giraffe, other toys, our fingers, etc.  Lola got her first tooth around four months, so Thomas will probably get his soon.

Sleeping
After being a sleeping champ for several weeks, only waking once a night, Thomas has hit the dreaded four-month sleep regression.  For the past week or two, he has been waking anywhere from 2 to 5 times a night.  He probably doesn't need to eat each time, but I usually nurse him since it's the quickest way to get him back to sleep.  Joseph has rocked him a few times and that's worked well, so we may try to keep doing that if he wakes before 2am so that he doesn't get used to eating many times during the night.  Thomas did give me one night of 11 hours of sleep last week, during which I surprisingly slept 8 hours straight myself (usually I wake to go to the bathroom), and it was amazing!  So I know he can do it, and hopefully he gets through this regression soon.

Thomas still goes to bed sometime between 7 and 8pm, and he usually wakes around 7am.  Although this morning he ate at 6 and went back to sleep, and I had to wake him at 8:15 so I could go to work.  When Thomas wakes up for the day, he lays quietly for a while and looks around.  We go get him and he smiles and is so happy to see us!  It's nice to wake up to a happy baby - Lola always cried when she woke up.

Eating
Thomas is still just eating breast milk.  We will wait until 6 months to introduce solids.  He nurses in the morning, gets four 4-ounce bottles at daycare, and then nurses again at bedtime. And again in the middle of the night whenever he wakes.  He has gotten much better at taking the bottle.  As for nursing, he is still a super fast eater and is done after about 5 minutes on each side.

Personality
Thomas has become quite the smiley guy, although he's harder to capture smiling on camera than Lola was.  He recognizes me, Joseph, and Lola, and he smiles really big when he sees us.  He also likes to laugh, and he seems generally okay with Lola always being in his space.  I think he's growing to love her.  He is generally content and only gets fussy when he's hungry or tired.  He loves being worn, and we wear him often so that we can cook dinner, clean the house, deal with Lola, etc.  He prefers to be on the floor playing than in a "container" (rocker, swing, bouncy seat).

Happy 4 months, my little man!
