Yesterday morning we went to my 20-week appointment with my OB. We were SO SO excited to find out the sex of the baby. I had even dreamt about it the night before, but in my dream, they weren't able to tell us what it was. Well, that dream came true. I went in for the ultrasound, and the technician took a bunch of measurements (this was also an anatomy scan to make sure everything is developing properly) and said that everything looked great. Then she asked us if we'd like to know the sex (YES!), and she started to look around. Unfortunately the baby was not cooperating. It was pretty cramped in there, and its legs were crossed tightly. She had me on my back and on each side, but still nothing. She prodded my stomach to try to make the baby move and change positions - nothing.
She said unfortunately she couldn't see anything. But she could tell we were anxious to know, so she said to go meet with the doctor and then come back for a second go-round. Hopefully the baby would move while I was walking around.
We met with the doctor, and she said everything looked good, although my amniotic fluid was a little low (but still in the "normal" range). She said I should stop doing any cardio-intense exercises so that more blood flows to the baby. So unfortunately I had to cancel the pregnancy class I've been taking, but I was able to transfer the class credits to a yoga class. The doctor said it's fine for me to walk and do yoga. I also informed her that we were switching practices to a midwifery, and she seemed to understand, so that's good.
Then we went back to the ultrasound room for one more shot. The baby had moved a little, and the technician was able to see a little bit of its bottom. After making me roll around some more on the table so she could check different angles, she said she isn't positive, but she'd guess it is a GIRL! She said she's 90-95% sure. I'm hesitant to believe her because when you're checking for a girl, you're really just looking for the absence of a penis. Since the baby was still tightly balled up, I'm afraid there could be a penis hiding in there somewhere!
We scheduled another appointment for 4 weeks from now, and they'll do another ultrasound to confirm. I'm probably going to switch practices in that time though (I submitted my transfer form to my current practice, so I just have to wait for the midwifery practice to receive and review my records), so hopefully the new practice will allow me to have another ultrasound. If not, I'll go to one of the private companies that does 3D ultrasounds - I may actually go there anyway because I'm too impatient to wait 4 weeks to know for sure!
In the meantime, I think we'll plan as if it's a girl. We don't like super girly stuff anyway, so the bedding and decor we pick will probably be gender neutral. I'm just ready to start decorating the nursery!
