Baby Breuer #2 is on the way! I got a positive pregnancy test on April 23. It's still very, very early - I'm just 4 weeks along. Joseph and I were both pretty surprised. We had just decided last month that we were ready to start trying for another baby, so it happened very fast.
I'm not going to share the news until I'm further along, but I wanted to keep track of the pregnancy until then. I'll publish this post once the news is public.
4 Weeks
As I said, I was very surprised, but of course very happy! I took a test Thursday night while Joseph was at rugby practice, since I was a couple of days late. It was positive, but I wanted to wait until the morning to tell Joseph so that I could take another test to be certain. That test was positive too, so I told Joseph when we were getting Lola out of bed in the morning. He was very excited!
So far my only symptom is tiredness. I noticed this week that I was getting extremely tired while driving to and from work, and I remember that I was very tired in my first trimester with Lola. I've been trying to sleep more, but that's hard to do with a toddler and work. I'm crossing my fingers I don't get the nausea I had with Lola.
This is slightly bad timing because I have several events over the next few weeks where it will be strange if I'm not drinking - book club, a girls stay-cation at a hotel in Buckhead, and a friend's bachelorette party. I will likely just tell everyone rather than try to hide it. It's too much trouble, and if I'm only drinking water, they'll just gossip behind my back anyway :)
But the timing is good in a few ways. I'll be just past 12 weeks for the Breuer family beach trip, so we can tell all of our family there. Also, I'm due on December 29, and while I'm not keen on having birthdays near Christmas (like mine), it means that my parents will likely be able to come stay with us for a bit before they head to Florida for the winter.
5 Weeks (April 28)
I made it to 5 weeks. I miscarried my first pregnancy between 5 and 6 weeks, so this is a scary time for me. I just want to fast forward to my first doctor's appointment so I can find out that the baby is all right. I called Intown Midwifery yesterday to make my appointment, and I'm going to go in at 9 weeks, on May 26. My mom will be in town to watch Lola while her school is closed that week, so I'm excited to tell her in person. Also, she'll be able to come to the appointment with me if she wants to. I think they do an ultrasound at the first visit, but I'm not sure. They did at my old OB, but I'm not sure about IM.
6 Weeks (May 5)
I'm still feeling pretty well - no nausea yet, although I'm still very tired most of the time. I did tell a few people about my pregnancy in the past week. I told my work partners, Stephen and Cliff, since we were about to sign a one-year lease on an office space, and I felt they should know before committing. They were both excited for me and said it didn't affect our business plans. I ended up missing book club on Thursday because Joseph stayed at work late for a party, so I didn't have to hide it there. But I did tell my friends that were at the stay-cation on Saturday (Sarah, Kat, Jessica, Sabrina, & Neisha). I also called Paige on Sunday and told her - she had just gotten back from her honeymoon in Ecuador. It was nice to tell a few people, and of course everyone was happy for me.
7 Weeks (May 12)
I don't know how it's possible, but I feel like I'm showing already. I can't really button my jeans, so I'm just leaving them unbuttoned under a loose shirt. I googled it, and apparently a lot of women show earlier in their second pregnancy since their muscles have already been stretched out - a good analogy I read is that it's like how blowing up a balloon a second time is easier. So I guess it's normal, but it sucks because I'm still trying to hide it until I go to the doctor. Not to mention I'd still like to wear regular clothes for a while. Other than that, I'm feeling well. No real nausea yet, which is great.
8 Weeks (May 19)
This morning I broke out my maternity clothes. I just couldn't squeeze into my pants anymore, so I needed my maternity jeans. I'm much more comfortable now! And I don't look huge or anything, but compared to how I normally look, my stomach is definitely sticking out. In bad news, the nausea has hit me hard over the past few days. It doesn't seem as bad as when I was pregnant with Lola, but it's still miserable. I have a bad taste in my mouth all of the time, and I get waves of nausea. I'm also super exhausted, but I can never manage to go to sleep early. Maybe tonight will be the night.
9 Weeks (May 26)
This morning I had my first appointment with the midwives. Everything looks good! I was a little worried because at first the midwife, Vanessa, couldn't find the heartbeat with the Doppler. But she said it's common to have difficultly finding it at 9 weeks. So she brought in Gloria, another midwife, and an ultrasound machine, and Gloria saw the heart beating. She was also able to pick it up on the Doppler. It was so reassuring to hear! I even got a bit teary - I had been very worried about something being wrong. My next appointment isn't until July, but I may go back in the next few weeks for a dating ultrasound. She said it's not required, but they do offer it if I want it, and it might be reassuring to see a good ultrasound (the machine they used today was an ancient one just used for backup). My mom arrived on Saturday to spend the week with us, and of course she was very excited when I told her that I'm pregnant.
10 Weeks (June 2)
No luck skipping the nausea - I'm constantly nauseated now. The midwife recommended taking vitamin B6 and Unisom, which seemed like a weird combination to me, but I googled it and it's apparently a common remedy. I've been taking it for a week now, and it helps me get through the day at work, but I'm still not feeling great. I have started going to bed earlier, so I'm getting 8-9 hours of sleep a night, and that definitely helps. I made an appointment with IM for June 18, when I'll be 12 weeks. They'll do a checkup and listen to the heartbeat; I just wanted to be reassured that everything is okay at the end of the first trimester. Then I'll feel much more comfortable telling everyone about my pregnancy (although I feel like most of my friends know already).
11 Weeks (June 9)
I'm still feeling awful. I can barely focus at work. I always feel like I need to throw up. I stopped taking the B6 and Unisom because swallowing the pills was making me gag, which then made me throw up. But I did read about a baking soda rinse that has helped make my mouth taste better, which makes me feel a little less nauseated. I'm just trying to get through the next few weeks and hope that I feel better soon. I know it's all worth it in the end, but it doesn't make it any easier.
12 Weeks (June 16)
Last Thursday I felt pretty well and thought maybe I was over the nausea. Then Sunday came and I felt like death. It was much, much worse than what I've been feeling, so I think it may have been food-related or possibly a virus. But I didn't do much Sunday other than lay in bed or on the couch, and I stayed home from work yesterday and today. I was feeling a bit better this morning, but I was still worried about the baby, so I called the midwives and made an appointment to come in. The midwife I saw, Janet, said everything looked good and the heartbeat was good. She gave me some suggestions for dealing with the nausea, and she offered to write me a prescription for something, but I declined (in hopes that it goes away on its own soon). Unfortunately I started feeling worse today as the day progressed, but I'm hoping I'll be good enough to go to work tomorrow morning. But in happier news - I'm done with the first trimester! If only technically, not in how I'm feeling :)
13 Weeks (June 23)
I think I may be finally getting past the nausea (fingers crossed!). I was able to start eating regularly again this weekend, and I'm feeling better. Not back to pre-pregnancy normal, but better, so I'll take it. Not much new to report otherwise. I go in on Friday for my next check-up. Then we will see all of the Breuers Saturday at the beach and we can finally tell them all the happy news!
14 Weeks (June 30)
After some rescheduling, I had my next regular appointment last Friday. It was just a quick check-up, and then we had a group session where the midwives discussed nutrition during pregnancy. There were two other expectant mothers there as well. We are at the beach now, and we told all of the Breuers when we arrived. They were all excited, although I think many of them guessed it due to my very loose clothing :) I'm not feeling so hot this week, but I'm napping when Lola naps and it's nice to have the week off work.
15 Weeks (July 7)
I'm still feeling the same - nauseated, but able to eat at least, and very tired. I feel like there has been a slight improvement, so hopefully I'll be fully over it soon. Last week at the beach I caught a cold, which didn't help. I'm going to try to start exercising since I think that might help (and I need to be exercising anyway).
I think we've told most of our friends and family about the pregnancy by now, so I will finally publish this post. In true second-child fashion, I have not taken any pregnancy photos to accompany this post, but I will try to remember to start taking them next week.
