I hear a lot about crime in the city, and specifically incidents in my neighborhood. Grant Park has a good communication network, so I hear about crimes via Facebook or our email group, and I know what to look out for. Luckily we haven't had to deal with any crime personally. We live on a fairly busy street with a bus stop across the street, so I think the frequent traffic (both vehicle and pedestrian) deters criminals.
Unfortunately this morning I had my first brush with crime. I got in my car to go to work, and I noticed the glove box was open and a few items where on the floor. Joseph had driven us to dinner in my car last night, and I know I hadn't opened the glove box while sitting in the passenger seat. I didn't see any signs of forced entry, and several dollars in change was still sitting in my console, so I figured the glove box must have fallen open somehow. But then I remembered that I keep my iPod in the armrest, where it connects to my music system. I opened the armrest, and sure enough, my iPod was gone.
I think that we must have accidentally left the car unlocked after dinner last night. I've heard of people going down streets, checking for unlocked cars. And the fact that the person left several dollars in change makes me think they were after electronics or other expensive items.
I'm really bummed, but at least there was nothing more valuable in the car. My iPod was 5 or so years old and mostly used in the car, so it's not a terrible loss. But I am upset that we were not more diligent about locking the car. Lesson learned!
